Shamim’s story
Shamim started her cycling journey with Sähëlï Hub five years ago, following a referral from her GP.
“I was unable to climb the stairs without getting breathless (due to my asthma), which was getting frustrating for me. So the GP referred me to the Sähëlï Hub exercise sessions at the Saltley Leisure Centre. From there, I learnt about women’s only cycling at Ward End Park.
“When I first started, I was not sure what kind of reception I would get. Shaafia was so welcoming and friendly that I felt accepted from the beginning. I went on to do the Velo 10 miles, which was a big achievement for me. During covid, my family also got into cycling. We have started to eat healthily and watch our diet, even more so after being referred to the SähëlïHub diabetes programme (CAPD) by my GP. I was pre-diabetic and the program has further changed our lifestyle. I have also motivated a lot of friends to start cycling with Sähëlï Hub. I recently did a 68-mile cycle ride for Women VCancer!
“Shaafia and Shaila have been so encouraging and supportive, to the point where my self-confidence, physical health and mental health have improved. The Sähëlï Hub team makes you feel like you belong and are always there for you. I can climb a few sets of stairs now, lol!
“Recently, my younger daughter has also joined SähëlïCycling Club and I can see her confidence and health improving.
“When I was younger, I used to love sports and was good at it in school, but was never allowed to join any after-school clubs. So it’s a very big achievement to get to where I am, all thanks to Sähëlï Hub – because that is what SähëlïHub does: empower women.”
During her time with us, Shamim has qualified as a ride lead, after building her skills and confidence and further completing a formal qualification. She now rides for other Sähëlï Hub participants, on Sunday mornings at Ward End Park. We are so proud of Shamim and her invaluable support in helping bring cycling to the ladies within this community.
